Optically Variable Ink (OVI)
Optically Variable Ink (also known as color-shifting or OVI ink) is a specialized security ink that changes color depending on the viewing angle. This unique effect is created through thin-film interference – the same optical phenomenon that makes butterfly wings shimmer. OVI is impossible to reproduce with scanners or standard printers, making it one of the most effective anti-counterfeiting technologies available.
How it works:
The ink contains microscopic multi-layer flakes that act as optical resonators. Each layer is precisely controlled in thickness. When light hits these flakes, some wavelengths are reflected while others cancel out. As the viewing angle changes, the path length of light shifts, causing a different color to become visible – for example, green may appear blue, or gold may turn green.
Key applications:
Banknotes and currency (used in over 100 countries)
Passports and ID documents
Security labels and certificates
Luxury brand protection
Tax stamps and excise bands
High-end product packaging
Advantages:
Instant visual authentication – no special equipment needed
Extremely difficult to counterfeit or copy
Color shift is unmistakable and unique
Durable and resistant to chemicals and abrasion
Available in multiple color combinations
